Made in London: Archie Proudfoot

Made in London: Archie Proudfoot

This is the first in a new monthly series of short films about London-based makers by filmmaker William Scothern—we’re calling them Made in London. The first film is about Archie Proudfoot, an artist and sign painter whose work uses the techniques and the aesthetics of traditional signage to explore our relationship with language. Watch:

Having graduated from studying a degree in English Literature during a recession, Archie went in search of work that would satisfy his yearning for an ‘interesting job’. “It was quite soon after the financial crash of 2008, and the employment sector was not great,” he says. “If you wanted an interesting job, you were going to have to put in quite a lot of time unpaid. And I thought, well I’ll just invest that time in myself.”

He specializes in the reverse-glass gilding process, often choosing to isolate a single word or phrase in the grandeur of gold, examining our emotional response to it, as well as the geometry and physical interplay of the letterforms themselves.

In sign painting he found a skill that could be honed over a lifetime. “It’s two years of practice before you can feel comfortable and happy in your ability,” he says. “I think it was the idea that it’s such a refined skill that you can spend a very long period of time working on and mastering. Sign painting just has this calm beauty to it, when you see someone who is very practiced at it do it well.” He now splits his time between creating bespoke signage for businesses across London and creating his own personal pieces.

Milan Design Week 2017: Passeggiata – An Experience of Home

Milan Design Week 2017: Passeggiata – An Experience of Home

Built in the 15th century, the wisteria-covered Casa degli Atellani played host to Leonardo da Vinci while he painted The Last Supper at the nearby Dominican convent, and once held parties that were the envy of the city. For Milan Design Week, it was the starting point for a series of designer-led city tours, inspired by Airbnb’s new Trips platform, as well as the location for showcasing the work and personal collections of contemporary designers, curated by Martina Mondadori Sartogo for the brand.

Artist and sculptor Halima Cassell hand-carved this series of geometric bowls from fired clay, inspired by Islamic architecture. “I create dynamic tension in my work by playfully manipulating the planes and facets of the patterns against each other,” she says. The piece above, part of her Small Ceramic Sculptures collection, is entitled Vaulted Keep – a place for storing tiny treasures.

German-born UK-based artist Heike Brachlow discovered glassblowing while she was in New Zealand and has made it a central part of her practice ever since. The collection shown at Casa degli Atellani was made from colorful cast glass forms fused together to create striking sculptures.

The most moving part of the installation was part of a table laid out with objects that have informed and inspired the work of Italian design duo Formafantasma – Moulding Tradition was actually their graduate project from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2009. It was a tribute to refugees lost and presumed killed at sea in an attempt to reach safer shores, created in the Sicilian ceramic tradition of Teste di Moro.

Jim Shepherd’s interlocking geometric wooden forms were handmade as part of his explorations of material, pattern, color and form. These and other pieces were nestled into the book shelves of the Milanese family home.

These 3D printed sculptures by Michael Eden are made from high quality nylon coated with a soft mineral coating. Describing himself as “a member of a unique generation that has bridged the digital divide,” and with a background as a potter, Eden conducted an MPhil research project at London’s Royal College of Art to enable him to fuse digital technology and his existing craft skills.

Studio Wieki Somers is a collaboration between late 1990s Design Academy Eindhoven graduates Wieki Somers and Dylan van der Berg. For Passegiata, they filled an ornamental side board (above and below) with curiosities collected throughout their careers that now provide inspiration for their work.

Found objects, maquettes and prototypes sat alongside images by photographer Elspeth Diederix who collaborated with the pair to interpret their research themes.

Perhaps the most idiosyncratic and personal offering was British designer Faye Toogood’s collection of rocks. Over her career she has amassed a large materials library to inform her work, of which these rocks form part.

Artfully arranged on a glass-topped cabinet filled of antique books belonging to the home owners, Sam Baron’s cutlery has been collected from many countries over many years and provides a walk through the almost unlimited possibilities in materials and techniques that have been employed in solving a single design problem.

And finally, in a sun-drenched window, Italian architect Matteo Thun, shared a series of his watercolors inspired by travels abroad, alongside all the accoutrements involved in their creation. The installation perfectly captured a moment of creativity in the heart of Milan.

The Top 10 Things Never to Ask, Say, or Do When Working With a Real Estate Agent

Real estate agents can do many things. They market homes, value properties, network like crazy, show houses, and make sure the lenders, title companies, and inspectors all do their job. However, there are some things you should not ask an agent to do, and there are some things you should not ask or say. At worst, it is against the law for agents to answer certain questions. Additionally, some things you ask an agent may make them hesitant to work with you. Try to avoid asking, saying, or doing the following things to make the house buying or selling process

Success in Real Estate Investing and Life

I credit my success in real estate investing, as a real estate agent, and in life to deliberate self improvement and success factors, which have become my keys to success. I have been very successful in real estate…but not because I was lucky or extremely smart. I became an agent in 2001, but I did not become very successful until 2008 and 2009. In 2006, I made only $28,000 the entire year! I have since bought 16 rentals properties, have from 12 to 29 fix and flips going at once, published five paperback books, and I bought a Lamborghini. Being successful

Dwell at HQ by Porte

After blazing through sales of the first two phases at HQ, Porte is on to selling it’s latest phase, Dwell, just to the east of Surrey Centre. This location has a lot to recommend it. The development will share the block with not one but two elementary schools. Hawthorne Park is just across the street. You’re just far enough from King George Boulevard to feel removed from all the bustle without losing the convenience of proximity to stores and shopping.

One of the proposed branches of the LRT line should pass just by HQ along 104 Avenue. This should be an obvious boon for the surrounding areas.

Park Boulevard

Concord Pacific keeps growing it’s Park Place community in Surrey Central. Right by King George SkyTrain station, the location is ideal for accessing transit, shopping, dining, the hospital, and the Simon Fraser campus.

Park Boulevard will incorporate retail space and is also just a stone’s throw from a variety of parks and nature areas, including Holland Park and Green Timbers.

Surrey has arrived. Expect the proposed Light Rail Transit system to revitalize the area even further.

Podcast 97: Flipping More Than 30 Houses Per Year with Abhi Golhar

On this episode of the InvestFourMore Real Estate Podcast, I have a great conversation with Abhi Golhar. Abhi has become a fantastic investor who flips more than 30 houses per year, but this number did not come easily. It took him years of mentorship, moving around the country, and near successes before he made it. Abhi found success not from finding the right strategy but from finding the right attitude. He started investing in 2002, but he did not realize true success until almost ten years later.  During that decade of trying, he never gave up. How did Abhi get

Matt Hoyt’s Chrysalis: Evidence of Time

Matt Hoyt’s Chrysalis: Evidence of Time

Matt Hoyt is famous for tiny sculptures that take an incredible amount of time. His newest works, entitled Chrysalis, are on view at Bureau Gallery this month, take a risky turn for an artist famous for small: they’re slightly bigger.

Untitled (Group 152 – Join), 2012-2016, 54 component objects comprised of some or all of the following: various putties, epoxy resin, krazy glue, tempera and spray paint

Untitled (Group 152 – Join), 2012-2016, with Bone Formation, 2015-2017

Bone Formation, 2015-2017, Various putties

Like his previous work, Matt creates sculptures over YEARS (note the date range in the titles), often shelving half-completed sculptures for so long that he forgets the original goal of the finished form. He is therefore constantly rediscovering, reexamining, and rebuilding his own forms. The colors aren’t solely aesthetic, but demonstrate the journey of alterations and additions as new putties, clays and resins build on previous forms.

Untitled (Group 143 – Combine) 2013-2015, with Ribcage, Pelvis, Tail Bone, 2008-2014

Untitled (Group 143 – Combine) 2013-2015, 25 component objects comprised of some or all of the following: various putties, tempera and spray paint

Ribcage, Pelvis, Tail Bone, 2008-2014, various putties, paper clay

Check out Design Milk’s feature of his 2014 show – you’ll notice these new works are bigger in 2 ways: scale and number. Several of the new sculptures measure over 8 inches wide – an enormous jump for someone who rarely breached an inch and a half. The larger works rest either alone on black tables that allow enough open space to keep them humble, or are shown alongside the numerous “grouped” arrangements, as if to prove a balanced math equation.

Untitled, 2015-2017, Polyurethane resin, various putties

Untitled, 2015-2017, Polyurethane resin, various putties

Untitled, 2014-2017, Various putties, spray paint

The “groups” have also grown. Though Matt has always married multiple objects in a single work of art, his past pairings of 2 or 3 objects have multiplied exponentially, now including and arranging up to 54 objects per set. These aren’t “chords” anymore – they’re entire songs.

Untitled (Group 157 – Unite) 2014-2017, with Hexagonal Growth Pattern, 2016-2017

Untitled (Group 157 – Unite), 2014-2017, 20 component objects comprised of some or all of the following: various putties, tempera and spray paint

Hexagonal Growth Pattern, 2016-2017, various putties, PVC foam, polyurethane resin

The risk of growth:
Size is THE single most important consideration for any work of art – particularly sculpture. Scale sets up the position and speed of the viewer. And though large sculptors usually benefit from scaling up as they gain means to do so, it’s risky for a tiny sculptor to enlarge even slightly, endangering a certain core identity while significantly shifting the physical distance for a viewer. But fear not – Matt nails the transition. The method, materials, and mystery remain the same, but the forms are reconsidered. These aren’t simply magnifications of smaller works, but new geometries that evolve in complexity JUST enough to hold the spotlight alone while remaining equally “precious”. In short, Hoyt managed to increase the size while keeping the viewer equally close.

Installation of Matt Hoyt “Chrysalis” at Bureau, NYC, 2017

Check out the show in person, and plan on staying a while. These may be the most epic sculpture per square inch in history.

What: Matt Hoyt “Chrysalis”
Where: Bureau, 178 Norfolk St, New York, NY
When: March 26 – April 30, 2017

‘Bosch’ Season Three: I’m Hooked

I don’t normally review television shows, because if I did my life would consist of nonstop criticism, praise, theorizing, and repeated attempts to kill myself. It may surprise people, but I watch even more television than I do movies and the thought of writing about Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Big Little Lies and the dozens of other Netflix and Amazon Prime Video shows I watch makes me sweaty in all the places I don’t want to be sweaty.

So when I was asked to watch the first two episodes of Amazon Video’s Bosch: Season Three, I hesitated, though ultimately I decided that free popcorn and soda and the opportunity to watch a show about a gritty homicide detective for two hours was not the worst way to spend my evening.

Besides, I’ve had Bosch lingering in my Amazon Video “Watch List” for months now, Titus Welliver’s steely, unamused eyes staring at me everytime I log in, daring me to watch his show rather than Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom for the 30th time.

Starting Bosch at the beginning of season three goes against everything I believe in when it comes to watching television: you watch from the beginning or not at all. In desperation, I navigated over to Amazon and watched the first two episodes of the first season, correctly assuming that it would be helpful to understand who this dude is, what makes him tick, and why I should give a damn before jumping ahead two years to watch the kickoff of season three, which debuts on Amazon Prime Video on April 21, 2017.

My first observation on season three: his daughter, played by Madison Lintz, looks a hell of a lot like the woman he sleeps with in the first couple episodes of the series.

Hmm.

Anyway, I digress. Season three of Bosch kicks off with a bang–literally, as one might suspect for a homicide show–as a homeless veteran gets killed in his RV, the only witness a street kid who flees instead of calling the cops. Harry Bosch and his partner (Jamie Hector) investigate, but of course they aren’t dealing with just that one case–there’s a trial involving Jeri Ryan, who apparently bashed a man’s head in last season but is on the verge of getting acquitted, and Bosch is stalking a creepy old man who may be a serial killer.

There’s a lot going on, which makes Bosch feel quite a bit different than your ordinary cop show. It isn’t your murder-by-the-episode kind of show, and the two episodes I got to watch early certainly presented more threads than it wrapped up. The characters are unique and interesting and the storylines fall somewhere between realistic and sensational for TV purposes, a happy medium if I must say so.

The show’s one weakness is that it clearly wants to be funny at times, but it isn’t; Bosch is generally serious, but the characters exchange enough barbs to lighten the mood. Unfortunately, the humor either feels out of place or forced.

My next course of action is to marathon through Bosch seasons one and two in anticipation of the rest of season three, because in the end, after watching the episodes that I watched, I’m hooked. The show is complex, entertaining and unpredictable, and those three elements make for a good detective show.

Can You Skip Your First Mortgage Payment When Buying a House?

When you buy a house and obtain a mortgage, most lenders will let you skip the first monthly payment. If you buy a house in April, you may not have to make your first payment until June 1st or even June 15th. Lenders will make this sound like a huge advantage, but are you really saving money by skipping a mortgage payment? The truth is banks would not give anyone a free month just because banks are nice. Banks charge buyers the interest for that month upfront. How are you still paying interest to the bank if they allow you
