2017 Gift Guide: Kids

2017 Gift Guide: Kids

There’s something about shopping for kids that feels way more fun than adults, right? Maybe it’s getting to re-live our childhood during the hunt for the perfect gift, or seeing the unfiltered joy on the face of the child opening it. Either way, you can’t beat it. From books to blocks to playhouses, we’ve rounded up a little something for every child on your holiday gift list.

Octahedrom Crayons Set of 15 by Kid Made Modern \\\ $13
You can never go wrong gifting a kid new crayons. I mean, was there anything better than opening a fresh box when you were little? And these crayons are even cooler with their two-toned design and multiple edges you can draw with for hours of fun.

Make A Face by Rock & Pebble \\\ $40
A wooden disc with pieces a kid can add to show various emotions and facial expressions. Teach them about their emotions or just let them play and make funny faces – either way, it’s hours of fun.

Andy Warhol Wooden Dominoes by Mudpuppy \\\ $30
With Warhol’s colorful, camouflage artwork adorning them, these dominoes bring a twist to the traditional game. The set includes 28 wooden pieces that fit within a wooden box with a sliding lid for easy storage.

Pantone Colors: A Children’s Book \\\ $10
It’s never too early to share your love of color with your favorite child. This visually stimulating book will teach them all about color and the variety of tones for each one from the color experts, Pantone.

Yayoi Kusama: From Here to Infinity by Sarah Suzuki \\\ $20
It’s hard to escape the Yayoi Kusama popularity boom and for good reason. Her infectious and visually enticing art not only makes for Instagram-worthy photos, but her use of colors and repetitious patterns are super enjoyable to stare at, so you know an illustrated kid’s book of her work will have the same effect on the little ones.

Alphabet Blocks by Pat Kim for Areaware \\\ $36
A twist on traditional alphabet blocks, these remove the block and leave you with 26 wooden letters in mahogany and pine. The “blocks” can help kids learn to spell or if they’re a little bit younger, they can enjoy stacking them and using them as shapes.

Funkis Doll House by ferm LIVING \\\ $225
ferm LIVING designed a miniature version of a Funkis House (short for functionalism), which is a Scandinavian style of house that became popular with its flat roofs, square shapes, and straight angles. This modern dollhouse is made of natural plywood and can be played with on a flat surface or hung on a wall.

Knit Rainbow Cushion \\\ $48
This colorful rainbow pillow is bound to bring any kid happiness as they’re lounging around watching TV or reading a book.

The Nugget \\\ $229
This set of four foam elements (1 sturdy folding base, 1 soft folding seat cushion, and 2 supportive pillows) can be arranged to form a sofa, bed, lounger, tent, or any variety of other configurations of forts a kid wants to build. Nugget is made to be furniture or to be used for play, but the options are limitless.

Palm Springs Playhouse by Sarah Walsh \\\ $169
Playhouses don’t have to only be brown plastic boxes or pink Victorians, they can also be modern, and in this case a nod to mid-century architecture. Complete with a slanted roof and clerestory windows, this Palm Springs inspired playhouse is decked out with desert themed motifs.

Celebrate a Monochromatic Holiday with Society6

Celebrate a Monochromatic Holiday with Society6

Even before Thanksgiving, everyone I know was decorating their homes with red, white, and green everything. Now that Thanksgiving is officially over and I feel like it’s finally appropriate to start celebrating the holidays, I’m in full decorating mode but I’m not the biggest fan of red and green hues. Fortunately, Society6’s artists know how to celebrate the holidays without all the colors of the rainbow. Here are a few monochromatic home decor items that tone down the colors but still fully celebrate holidays and the winter season.

Podcast 129: How to Find Great Tenants with RentPrep

On today’s episode of the InvestFourMore Real Estate Podcast, I speak with Steve White and Eric Worral of RentPrep. Steve started RentPrep to help large property management companies screen their tenants after working in the debt collection business trying to get bad tenants to pay their bills. I talk with both Eric and Steve about how they screen tenants, how they help landlords find great tenants, what it is like to try to collect debts from tenants, and things landlords need to watch out for when renting their properties. There is a ton of great information on this podcast, and

Perfectly Curated Tableware Compositions That Make Us Calm

Perfectly Curated Tableware Compositions That Make Us Calm

Bob and I are no strangers to platters. Sure we are most known for our out-of-the-box presentation, like hanging churros from giant clear parasols. But that doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate a beautiful arrangement of tableware.

With the holiday season comes a slew of gatherings… some intended to delight and surprise their guests at every turn, and others a pure showing of tradition and cozy familiarity. We are lucky, we get to create and experience both.

Here are a collection of photographs displaying overhead shots of vessel groupings. I find myself hypnotically attracted to these shots. The compositions combined with the perfectly curated material combinations are surprisingly soothing. Almost as if a meditation… a similar feeling comes over me when perusing thingsorganizedneatly.tumblr.com.

We invite you to use this collection as a way to gather your calm… or simply treasure these beautifully designed objects.

Happy Holidays! Wishing you all TASTE-ful and delicious gatherings!

2017 Gift Guide: Design Milk Everyday

2017 Gift Guide: Design Milk Everyday

By now you might be following our sister Instagram account @designmilkeveryday where we try to find interesting, unique and overall just awesome modern design that’s affordable and attainable (because let’s be honest, the best kind of the designs are the ones in your own home, right?). We’ll occasionally share a splurge or investment piece but for the most part, we do our best to source items that won’t have your wallet hurting too much after you check out and trust us, there are a lot of cool finds you’ll want to add to your shopping cart. Below are some of the most liked and most talked about items we’ve shared on Design Milk Everyday.

Enamel Pins by Hemleva \\\ $12
These enamel pins by Hemleva are calling our names (that top left one specifically/unfortunately). If you have a friend who’s nicknamed the Plant Lady, these pins would make great stocking stuffers.

Wearable Planter Pin by Wearable Planter \\\ $39
Speaking of plants, nothing would solidify someone’s label as a plant lover than wearing a mini succulent as their accessory of choice.

Peace Art Print designed by Ampersand Design Studio, available at Chasing Paper \\\ $95
Nothing says good vibes more than one of our favorite emojis which is why we think this art print deserves a place on anyone’s gallery wall.

Lunar Phase necklace by Yenchen & Yawen \\\ $70
The moon is always out when this necklace is on. It’s made of jesmonite, a type of acrylic resin, and is handmade which means every necklace is unique with definite variations.

Elephant DIY Paperlamp by OWL Paperlamps \\\ $33
These lamps are sold as a DIY papercraft kit with everything you need to add a little glow to a room (the only thing not included is an LED light bulb). We can see them standing sweetly in a nursery.

Manual Coffeemaker Nº2 by Manual \\\ $120
The pour-over method of coffee is a popular choice in the coffee world because it gives you complete control of all the variables that affect your cup of joe. For the coffee aficionado, this minimalist pour-over brewer is enough reason to wake up bright and early.

Baskets by master weavers in Bolgatanga, Ghana, available at The Baba Tree Basket Company \\\ Starts at $32
These ethically sourced African baskets add a pop of color into any indoor or outdoor space. When you head over to the site to shop, you’ll notice that each basket is photographed by the weaver who made it. That’s because 5-20% of the basket’s price goes to the weaver in addition to the compensation he/she has already received. If that wasn’t a good enough reason to shop, we don’t know what is.

Braid Cat Bed by Ohhio \\\ $89
Because your feline family members deserve some modern design goods too. Ohhio also makes dog beds and blankets (for humans, that is) in its signature braided look.

1000 Colours Puzzles by Clemens Habicht \\\ $40
This seemingly hard puzzle to complete is actually easier to put together than you think. For a tougher challenge, there’s also a massive 5000 piece edition.

Ceramic Mugs by Helen Levi for ban.do \\\ Starts at $60
In our opinion, mugs are always a crowd favorite but only when they’re handmade, truly unique, and in support of your local ceramicists.
