Introducing Orphan Work: From the Founders of Material Lust

Designers Lauren Larson and Christian Lopez Swafford, the duo that makes up New York City-based Material Lust, continually push the envelope with their forward-thinking vision solidifying their their place in both the art and design world. Their latest endeavor sees the launch of Orphan Work, an anonymous place where “orphaned” material can be reimagined into new design objects, like lighting, bookends, candle holders, bottle openers, etc. The clever venture becomes more about the designs and less about the brand behind them. Jeni’s Mom’s Day gift pick: Paper & Clay

Forgotten Collection by Anja Lapatsch and Annika Unger

Forgotten Collection is not only a collection of design objects, but they’re objects designed to make you think deeply about time, value, production, and reproduction.

Using unusual materials such as birch-tar and pitch, they worked with archaeological experts to mimic the effects of nature on materials. Designed by Anja Lapatsch and Annika Unger, they aimed to use old world techniques to create a storied collection — to recreate something similar to the oldest archaeological objects found in 220,000 B.C. Using the ancient manufacturing processes of slow pyrolysis (dry distillation) of organic materials in a self-made kiln, it creates a unique look that isn’t too ‘shiny and new’.

The use of birch-pitch also has significance beyond just its look. Throughout time, birch-pitch has soaked up days past, providing a richer, deeper experience beyond just material usage. Using the forgotten method of dry distillation, the series of objects explore the past and the future and the effects of change.

Rental Property 17 has been Purchased

Today, after close to 2 years since the last one, I bought another rental property! This property is nothing like my other rentals and may not count as a rental to many of you, but it does to me. The property is a small commercial shop that I can use for storing building supplies and other miscellaneous items I am using for my flipping business. Even though I am not renting out the property, I can have my company pay me rent for using the property. I am also looking at buying some much larger commercial properties. If I buy

Desktop Wallpaper: May 2017

This month’s wallpaper is short and simple but plenty meaningful, especially if you’re a creative or a maker. For this year’s Designer Desktop series, we’ve been featuring an ongoing theme of wallpaper, textile, and pattern brands and so our friends at Flat Vernacular paired their studio’s motto with one of their newer designs, an intricately layered patterned “To and Fro.” The cool thing about this design is that there’s no specific “match” to the pattern, so you can really get abstract with how you decide to hang the wallpaper (as shown in this room!).

As for the motto (which we have happily adopted as our new mantra as well), Payton Turner of Flat Vernacular said it beautifully:

It’s up to you which interpretation you choose! We choose to take it literally. Make something every single day. Flat Vernacular holds true to its original mission statement through Making Everyday. To find and really hone in on a beautiful balance between art and design, we think you’ve got to explore through process. Create as many rounds of a design as you possibly can. The more avenues you explore in your studio practice, the more messes you make, the more likely you are to create a really singular piece of work that can stand up both conceptually speaking and design wise.
