How to be a Great Real Estate Agent
from Invest Four More http://ift.tt/2dtH73P
Friday Five with Jon Burgerman
Born in the United Kingdom, NYC-based Jon Burgerman is a contemporary artist, or one might say, a professional doodler and his signature bold, graphic style is quite infectious. He began with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art from Nottingham Trent University before moving to New York in 2010. Since then, he’s been exhibiting his work all over the world and even became one of the first artists to exhibit artwork in the White House, which led to a personal note from Vice President Joe Biden. This year he’s been focused on making books but he recently launched a coloring book, called Burgerworld, that gives you the opportunity to partially jump inside his creative mind while exploring your own. Burgerman’s playful and distinctive approach to art will make you want to dive right in and in this week’s Friday Five, you get to do so.
1. Adam Green’s Aladdin
I went to Adam’s exhibition at the Hole Gallery in NYC earlier this year and loved all the sets and props from his Aladdin movie (which I’ve not actually seen yet). I’m a bit worried the movie might just be terrible (name one good movie with Macaulay Culkin in apart from Home Alone) but I really like the lo-fi cardboard DIY aethestic of the whole project. Rather than try to be super slick and clean everything is hand made, a bit rough and full of personality.
2. Chuck Jones
Chuck Jones directed, amongst many other things, my absolutely most favourite animation ever, One Froggy Evening. He also created characters (Marvin the Martian, Road Runner) brought many to life (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck) and defined believable, strange, wonderful worlds within animation.
3. Edward Gorey
I recently went to The Edward Gorey House museum on a trip back from Nantucket. I didn’t know Gorey’s work that well but now I’m a complete convert. I love anything that’s got a seemingly innocent exterior but is dark and naughty inside. His drawings and line work are excellent, full of macabre humour. Looking over his work I though that Tim Burton really owes a huge debt to Gorey. In fact you can see a lot of Edward Gorey in today’s comics, zine’s, poster scenes.
4. Norman McLaren
I love the work of Scottish Canadian animator Norman Mclaren. The abstract, playful, cheeky films he made are truly inspiring. I mean he made a film called Boogie Doodle! It’s amazing to think he made these back in the 1940s. I can only dream to make something as beautiful as Dots on my ipad, it just doesn’t seem possible. Through Mclaren’s work I’ve discovered lots of National Film Board of Canada animation I love, and more abstract animators, playing with visualising sound, like the amazing Mary Ellen Bute.
5. Esphyr Slobodkina
The influence of Esphyr Slobodkina is evident today in a lot of illustration and graphic design but I don’t think she gets the credit she deserves. Her abstract works and picture books are wonderful, abstract and still feel fresh. Less is often more and I think you can see her influence on artists like Stuart Davis (currently showing in the Met) who then laid the foundation for someone like Nina Chanel Abney.

Fresh From The Dairy: in4mation x Society6 Snapback Hats
Society6 has launched a limited edition Artist Series Snapback Hat in collaboration with Hawaii-based in4mation and five Society6 Artists. Each hat features in4mation’s signature “hi” (Hawaii’s state initials), which doubles as a fun greeting to everyone you meet. Show ’em you’re friendly!
The hats are limited to 150 editions of each design, and the first 50 of each are available through Society6. The “hi” is embroidered and the hats are made of breathable polyester. The Society6 artist’s name is included on custom taping in every hat. Aloha!
in4mation x Society6 Snapback Hat: Hollis Brown Thornton
Hollis Brown Thornton is an artist based in Aiken whose work has been primarily focused on nostalgia, particularly that of the VHS tape. He says, “In many ways, they are pure nostalgia. Personally, and on a broader scale, they represent the outdated things that are still around, like ideas or beliefs that no longer serve their original purpose. The VHS tapes are a simple and playful way of looking at that larger idea of change, and how we often times have a hard time letting go of certain things.”
in4mation x Society6 Snapback Hat: Zsalto
Zsalto is a Hungarian artist, living and working in California who just so happened to study molecular biology as well as art in Budapest. She’s both an artist and a cancer researcher, who is inspired by nature, botany, wildlife, folklore and literature. She says of her design: “My original design, called ‘Little Red Ridding Hood’, is a hand painted mandala pattern with botanical and folklore elements, inspired by the deep lush forests of the magical world of Grimm tales. I used delicate and detailed brushwork and symmetry, combined with fresh greens to recall lazy summer afternoons from my childhood.”
in4mation x Society6 Snapback Hat: Casey Saccomanno
Casey Saccomanno is a print & surface designer currently living in Philadelphia currently working for Lilly Pulitzer and Threaded Earth brands. Inspired by colors/textures found in nature, Casey approaches her designs with a more handmade approach whether its drawing or watercolor. She says, “I just went to the garden and looked at all of these leafy plants and wanted to draw them all!!!! This is my moody version of a Tropical Iridescent hot-house floral. I wanted to created detailed florals set on a textured black background. This print was hand-drawn and painted with pencil and paint techniques.”
in4mation x Society6 Snapback Hat: Galaxy Eyes
Galaxy Eyes is a visual artist based in São Paulo, Brazil who creates positive art inspired by music, sun-kissed beaches, wildflowers and blue skies. Galaxy Eyes explains this interesting technique: “After many experiments with marbling, I started using nail polish to get the results I wanted. I had never thought of using that type of paint, but after doing a couple of random tests, I really enjoyed it–and have been exploring the technique ever since. The ‘Gravity’ series was made out of enamel in many variations of blue and teal. I then used india ink for the splatter. I was inspired by the waves and the underwater world. I believe that the natural movement that comes with marbling better represents the cycles of nature that I wanted to portray. And I love the unexpected results that this kind of pattern delivers.”
in4mation x Society6 Snapback Hat: Wacka
Creating chilled out vibes and tropical art since 2015, Wacka creates bold, vibrant, edgy, nostalgic, and funny. He says, “‘Whoa’ Sunrise is all about pulling up to the favorite break point in SoCal, keeping the tunes blasting a little bit longer as we linger in the Jeep—no doors, no top—and just breathing in the salty air. The palm fronds wave at us a chilled out ‘yo’ with their weird looking hands and the smell of surf wax and sunscreen permeates. Endless summers forever.”
In an ongoing effort to support independent artists from around the world, Design Milk is proud to partner with Society6 to offer The Design Milk Dairy, a special collection of Society6 artists’ work curated by Design Milk and our readers. Proceeds from the The Design Milk Dairy help us bring Design Milk to you every day.

The Poster Child for Luxe Minimalism: The Thin Gold Line
The following post is brought to you by The Thin Gold Line. Our partners are hand picked by the Design Milk team because they represent the best in design.
These days I’ve been into the single-art-piece-that-makes-a-statement look. I still have lots of love for the gallery wall, but much less patience for the moving and arranging that it takes to really make it look good. The Thin Gold Line is the brainchild of three French-Italian brothers: Audric Dandres (a.k.a. Plus Minus) is the designer, Lénaïc does the conceptualizing and writing, and Arnold manages the business side of the project. The trio wanted to created posters that referenced four favorite iconic movies, in an abstract minimal way: Star Wars, the Matrix, Star Trek and Lord of the Rings. I’m totally into this idea of subtle nod to a favorite movie rather something more overt. It makes the artwork a piece with a hidden story.
With such a minimal design, the materials become the real stars. The brothers chose an Italian paper made by Fedrigoni, a firm that has been producing paper in Italian since 1717. They are using Sirio Ultra Black, chosen for the lack of carbon black in the paper’s pigments, which makes it resistant to oxidation. It also happens to be the blackest paper on the market. The only other element in the design is gold foil, which is produced by Kurz Luxor, a German company founded in the late 19th century and known creating gold foil for luxury brand packaging.
After an extensive search for a firm that could produce the posters using a hot foil stamping technique that would preserve the thin, intricate lines of the design, only an Italian firm in Verona was able to provide the level of precision on a large scale (each poster is about 28″ x 40″). (And don’t miss the beautiful video of the process below. Warning: it’s totally trance inducing in the best way possible.) The hot foil stamping is the only technique that results in a high luminosity on black papers—a crucial component to a project, which plays with the conceptual idea of light.
There’s so much to love here. The graphic and material emphasis makes this a visually appealing project on its own. But if there’s a movie buff in your house, this might just be a must-have. I’m already thinking ahead to Christmas. I have a few names on my list who could use a little “one ring to rule them all.”
These posters are being released through a Kickstarter campaign that launched this week so it’s really not too early to start checking those names off your Christmas list!

Tailored: Playful, Hanging Shapes You Can Hug
Bryony Roberts Studio has created a collection of hanging shapes that are designed to connect with human bodies. The puzzle-like pieces, which make up the Tailored exhibition at pinkcomma gallery, fit snugly around a person’s shoulders, chest, and hips giving them a form of intimacy not usually designed within furniture or architecture.
Each wrapped piece is of a different shape and size, just like human bodies, and they’re tailored to different people. However, the abstract pieces invite a sense of playfulness and an invitation to try them out, encouraging people to find their own way of interacting with them.
Tailored is on display through October 21st, 2016 at the pinkcomma gallery in Boston, Massachusetts.

Circles and Outlined Posters by Atelier Cph
Graphic art and photography enthusiasts will be thrilled by the latest collections from Copenhagen-based studio Atelier Cph called Circles and Outlined.
As its name suggests, the Circles poster series was inspired by circles in various sizes. Using hand painted textilSe and cut out lines, they created a set of stark minimal art. In Outlined, the artists took hand-painted fabric cutouts and combined them with digital shapes, then connected them with thin lines. Striking black and white colors are softened with warm neutrals. Danish photographer Jonas Danholt then shot the arranged pieces with a Hasselblad camera to show paint, texture, and structure in a new, digital way.
