Earlier this year, Japanese design studio nendo presented an installation during Milan Design Week with Friedman Benda of 50 mirror finished chairs, which were inspired by manga comics in Japan. Manga refers to the comics designed within a series of frames on a single sheet of paper that expresses “a high degree of flatness and abstraction, and which is composed of a series of lines.” Each of the 50 manga chairs has a different personality and when lined up in a grid, they tell a story. Rearrange the chairs to a new configuration and the narrative changes.
Now, the 50 Manga chairs are rolling stateside to be shown at the Friedman Benda gallery in New York City until October 29th, 2016.
