A lot of people subscribe to the Dave Ramsey school of thought. Pay off all debts, including your mortgage, and you will be financially smart and safe. While I can see why many people think it is smart to pay off your mortgage, I have a different viewpoint. I think it is actually unwise to try to pay off your mortgage in many situations. I do not think it is a good investment or a safe investment for most situations. I do not say this to be a contrarian, but from personal experience and from the many stories I have heard
